Statement No. 5/2025
23 September 2025
According to a statement issued by the Border News Agency, on 20 September 2025, at around 11:00 a.m. (Myanmar Standard Time), Mudra, a female journalist with the Border News Agency based in Maungdaw, was taken from her home in Maungdaw by a group identified as the intelligence unit of the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA).
Since her detention, journalist Mudra has been cut off from all contact with her family, which has raised deep concern for her safety. The Independent Myanmar Journalists Association (IMJA) expresses its grave worry over this situation.
We therefore earnestly call on the Arakan Army (AA) to recognize the vital role that journalists play in a democratic society, to respect international laws that guarantee the protection of media workers, and to ensure her immediate and unconditional release.
We believe that the Arakan Army (AA), as an entity that values democracy, will also respect and uphold the rights of journalists, setting a strong example by supporting the essential work of the media.
